HELEN SVOBODA PLAYS ABSTRACT SONGS:
Helen Svoboda is a double bassist, vocalist and composer. Her work explores the melodic potential of the contemporary double bass, intricately weaving extended techniques and overtones with vocal tessiture amidst abstract song-writing and vegetable-themed compositions. “A musician who absolutely defies categorisation” (Andrew Ford – The Music Show, ABC), her performance practice emits a childlike, quirky energy, with a flair for "allowing difficult ideas to sound whimsical and free" (Kristin Berardi, AUS).
This eve she plays Abstract Songs with her new trio feat. herself (double bass, ukelele bass, voice, FX, Yamaha Reface) + Andrew Saragossi (woodwinds, FX) and Daniel Waddingham (guitar, FX).

REUBEN LEWIS (solo):
Reuben’s practice is both singular and eclectic. As an award-winning composer, improviser, bandleader and producer he has refined a diverse electro-acoustic language, devised through trumpet with extended techniques and preparations alongside live analogue processing with pedals and samplers, that is as much at home in a nightclub as it is on a hilltop in Malaysia surrounded by dancers and bull-trance shamans. As a solo artist, critics have lauded his work as “a vivid listening experience that gleams with sinister detail” (The Wire) and “beyond category” (The Australian), whilst his ensemble I Hold the Lion’s Paw has been likened to the “feeling of having stumbled into someone else’s LSD trip” (Sydney Morning Herald).
