James O'Brien Trio

  • The Brunswick Green 313 Sydney Road Brunswick, VIC, 3056 (map)

Pianist James O’Brien is regarded as one of Australia's rising jazz talents.

James’ distinctive sound is creative and forward-thinking, yet firmly grounded in the rich tradition of jazz. His versatile and virtuosic piano playing has been noted for its ‘maturity belying his youth’.

A graduate from the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), James has since shared the stage with a range of notable artists including Kate Ceberano, Dick Oatts, Remy Le Boeuf, Jamie Oehlers, Mat Jodrell, Sam Anning, and Gian Slater. He also has been recorded on a number of albums as a sideperson, including Daniel Susnjar’s WAM Award winning ‘The Recipe’ (2020).

During his career, James has performed with award-winning groups such as the Australian National Jazz Orchestra Youth Big Band, the Horizon Art Orchestra, Kate Pass Kohesia Ensemble, Perth Cabaret Collective, Libby Hammer Quartet, the WA Jazz Project, and the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra – among others.

Join him at The Brunswick Green as he presents an exciting evening of jazz classics alongside Melbourne stalwarts Ross Anderson on bass, Luke Andresen on drums, and special guest vocalist, Brock Alexander, as they capture a sound made famous by the likes of Oscar Peterson, Benny Green, and Ray Brown.
